Using z/OS Assembler

This course focuses on basic assembler language coding. Students gain fundamental assembler language programming and debugging skills that are applicable for both MVS and VM assembler language programmers.

Students learn to:

  • Define storage and data constants.
  • Use the binary and decimal arithmetic instructions.
  • Use the compare instructions.
  • Branch according to the results of compare and arithmetic operations.
  • Code looping and array processing routines.
  • Call subroutines using standard linkage convention.
  • Read and analyse program dumps.
  • Code more complex instructions such as EX, TR and TRT.

Background

To benefit from this course, participants need:

  • To know either the TSO/ISPF editor (see ISPF/PDF basics) or CMS editor or basic CMS commands.
  • A working knowledge of binary and hexadecimal arithmetic.
